Freiburg tram

Freiburg tram

The objectives of the project were to simulate how much energy can be reduced in the system adding a flywheel and to analyse the effect of a 150kW electric bus charger in the city centre (Europaplatz) fed directly from the overhead line-catenary.

Description of the project:

Create the model of the tram network adding a constant load active during a repetitive period of time. The user can analyse the effect of the charger load when tram vehicles are running during rush and valley hours. The following problems are solved with the simulation tool: - Which is the maximum temperature of the contact wire? - Is the voltage of the contact wire within the values defined in EN50163? - How much energy can be stored in the flywheel? Does the investment have a positive ROI? - How much braking energy can be reused to charge electric buses? - Which is the effect on the network (temperature and voltage) when the system runs in a degraded mode (1 substation disconnected) and the charger is active?
